(Guernsey, Channel Islands, British Isles)

Guernsey Travel and Transport: Picture showing arriving 'Condor' ferryEasy to reach by either plane or ferry, Guernsey is a small island and simple to travel around, using either bus transport, hire cars or taxis. Those choosing to travel by bus will find the terminal in the town of St. Peter Port, with regular buses transporting passengers from this town to destinations and attractions all across Guernsey.

Those choosing to travel by rental car will soon find that the roads can be quite narrow and often winding, with a definite lack of signposts. Guernsey's road network has adopted its very own transport system and road rules, with yellow junction boxes indicating the island's very own filter system.

Guernsey Airport is a busy air facility in La Planque, in the parish of Forest and on the southern side of the island. Around one million passengers use the airport each year, flying in from the UK, French and German destinations including Birmingham, Bournemouth, Exeter, London, Manchester, Southampton, Paris, Frankfurt and Munich, along with some of the other Channel Islands, such as both Alderney and Jersey. Major airlines operating at Guernsey Airport include Aurigny Air Services, Blue Islands, Flybe and Lufthansa. Bus transport, taxis and surprisingly cheap car rental are all on hand at the airport, meaning that it is easy to travel to your chosen destination on the island.

Driving in Guernsey is the most popular way to travel around the island, and car hire is both plentiful and very affordable, with fuel prices being considerably lower than those in the UK. Cars always drive on the left-hand side of the road, and speed limits are much slower than you might expect, with a maximum 35 mph / 56 kph being enforced. Parking is free all over Guernsey, although some areas have time restrictions. The main car parks in St. Peter Port can be found at Albert Pier, Crown Pier and also at North Beach. A park and ride service travels from Footes Lane.

Ferry transport is of great importance to the island and each day, regular ferries travel to Guernsey from Portsmouth, Poole and Weymouth, and then onto Jersey and St. Malo. Condor Ferries is the main operator for this route, with both standard and faster catamaran ferries available, both of which transport passengers and cars, and feature good facilities on board, including a duty-free shop, gift shop and hot snacks. The Isle of Sark Shipping Company operates ferries between Guernsey and Sark, while in the summer, ferry transport connects several small harbours in Normandy, being run by Manche Iles Express.
